Water bottles are extremely harmful to both humans and the environment. Everyone knows that we need water to survive, but getting that water from plastic water bottles isn’t the way to go. With all the chemicals that companies are putting in the water to keep it “clean” and make it “last longer.”

One of these harmful chemicals is antimony or a chemical that has many negative effects when consumed, including headaches and depression. And the longer a water bottle goes unopened and un-consumed the more chemicals and plastic particles fill the water. And many people think that bottled water is cleaner than tap water but according to the World Wildlife Fund International, about 25% of bottled waters are just tap water run through a cheap filtration process.

The plastic the bottles are made of are made from fossil fuels. which gives off air pollution when it’s being manufactured, and about 1.5 million tons of plastic are made each year for bottles. This means harmful gases like benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, carbon monoxide, along with many more chemicals are all released into the atmosphere when the plastic is being made.

Along with that, many people don’t recycle their bottles according to https://www.ecowatch.com/tap-water-vs-bottled-water-1973932208.html or“Echo Watch.” And it can take as long as 450 years to decompose. And when they do decompose the particles just sit there because no organisms can digest them, according to Genevieve Johnson, education director and marine coordinator of the Voyage of the Odyssey. And not to mention all the marine life killed by polluted waters already.

Although tap water may not be perfect it is actually a lot more healthy for both you and the environment. For starters tap water is also filled with chemicals, but one of these chemicals, fluoride, is actually good for you. And according to the EPA, it protects you against joint and bone conditions like skeletal fluorosis. And like I said before, a lot of bottled waters are just tap water put through a cheap filtration process.

So remember this next time you go to the store to pick up a 25-pack of water bottles. [Most are 24 pack]
