A student survey was conducted to find out the political opinions of Indian Land High School students. They were asked questions like, “What political party do you think would do a better job of eliminating the Isis problem?”. To widen the variety of student opinions I asked five students from each grade. The results were somewhat different than expected. Some students were unsure on some questions like, “What party do you believe stands more for women’s rights?”. One student even commented when asked, “Well Carly Fiorina is a Republican, but Hillary Clinton is a Democrat, so I can’t really say who stands more for women’s rights.” I even got a comment from a student that said, “All these parties say they support this or that, but they do it for popularity”.

Students were asked what party they believed would do a better job of solving our border control problem. Many students responded with the Republican party strictly because of Donald Trump’s idea of building a wall. The Republican party certainly won the students on this subject. One student commented, “If we continue to let in all of these foreign immigrants, the job opportunities that our citizens have will be filled up. This is why we are having such a hard time creating enough jobs.” Some would disagree with this comment, but this question is pondered by quite a few Americans.

Another question that was asked got just the opposite results. Students were asked, “What political party do you believe stands more for gay rights?” A majority of the students said that they thought the Democratic party stood more for gay rights. Some students commented that even though the fourteenth amendment has been passed, the Republican party still fights to eliminate gay rights. Others even said that people only say they support it because they want our votes.

Finally, the question on the Isis problem was brought up. Students had a hard time answering this question. In the end, the Republican party won the favor of the students. One student commented, “I think the Republican party will solve this problem. Some say it’s because they are warmongers, but the truth is they just aren’t afraid to upset anybody by going to war”.
After looking over the results it seemed that it was the Democrats that won the students by a small margin. It really came down to women’s rights and gay rights ultimately. These responses are only a small sample of the political opinions Americans have about the political parties, but the upcoming election should reveal the main party that individuals favor for 2016.
